How to Read an Audit Report and Turn Findings Into Shipped Fixes

An audit report is only valuable if findings get fixed. Learn how to prioritize, assign, and ship recommendations from your product audit.

You’ve received your audit report. It’s detailed, organized, and — depending on the audit scope — potentially contains dozens of findings. The initial reaction for most teams is somewhere between energized and overwhelmed.

This guide is about what to do next.

🗂️ Understanding the Severity Taxonomy

Every finding in a professional audit report is assigned a severity level. The specific labels vary by provider, but the tiers typically work like this:

Critical. Functionality that is completely broken or that creates significant risk (data loss, security exposure, payment failure). These should be fixed immediately, regardless of sprint planning. A critical finding is a production incident waiting to happen.

High. Significant issues that meaningfully degrade the user experience or conversion. Think: a broken state that affects 20% of users, a mobile layout that makes a core feature unusable on smaller screens, an error message that is misleading enough to cause users to give up. These belong in the current or next sprint.

Medium. Noticeable issues that don’t block core functionality but create friction. These are real problems worth fixing — just not emergencies. Schedule them in your normal backlog grooming cycle.

Low. Minor issues, visual inconsistencies, edge case behavior. Log them in your issue tracker and address them when you’re in that area of the codebase anyway.

🧘 The First Step: Triage, Don’t Panic

Read through the full report before taking any action. The goal of the first pass is to build a mental model of the themes — are most issues concentrated in one flow? Are there systemic patterns (like missing ARIA labels everywhere) that can be fixed with a single targeted change? Are there quick wins that can be shipped without touching complex code?

During the first read, resist the urge to immediately assign issues. Context matters for prioritization.

📅 Creating Your Fix Plan

After the initial read, categorize findings by impact and effort. A simple 2×2 matrix works well:

  • High impact, low effort: These are your quick wins. Ship them first. They build momentum, demonstrate progress to stakeholders, and often have disproportionate conversion or user experience impact.
  • High impact, high effort: These go into planned sprints with appropriate resourcing. Don’t defer them indefinitely.
  • Low impact, low effort: Handle these opportunistically, when you’re nearby in the code.
  • Low impact, high effort: Be honest about whether these belong in the near-term backlog at all.

🎫 Writing Good Tickets

An audit finding is not a ticket. A finding describes a problem. A ticket describes the work required to solve it.

When converting findings to tickets, include:

  • What the problem is (the finding, summarized)
  • Why it matters (user impact and, if relevant, the business impact)
  • The recommended fix (from the report — don’t restate vaguely)
  • Reproduction steps (for bugs) or a reference to the relevant section of the report
  • Acceptance criteria — how will you know when this is fixed?

Good tickets reduce back-and-forth, speed up implementation, and make QA verification possible.

👥 Involving the Right People

Different types of findings belong with different teams:

  • Performance findings: Usually engineering (build optimization, image pipeline, third-party script loading)
  • Accessibility findings: Shared between design (visual contrast, layout) and engineering (ARIA, semantic HTML)
  • UX/CRO findings: Design and product, with engineering estimating effort
  • SEO findings: Typically engineering for technical items, content team for metadata

Brief the relevant leads on the report before distributing it widely. They’ll be more effective advocates for prioritization if they understand the context.

✔️ Validating Fixes

An audit finding is only closed when it’s been verified in a production-like environment — not just in a developer’s local build. This is worth being explicit about in your process.

For each fixed finding, the person who made the fix should document how they verified it (screenshot, test result, or manual confirmation) in the ticket. A quick review cycle against the original audit finding prevents regressions.

🔄 Making Audits Recurring

The highest-performing product teams treat audits as a recurring practice, not a one-time event. Scheduling an audit aligned to major release cycles — ideally before each significant launch — maintains quality standards and ensures that issues are caught while they’re still cheap to fix.

Over time, recurring audits also produce a visible quality trend line — evidence that the product is improving, which is valuable both internally (team morale, engineering culture) and externally (investor and customer confidence).
